FAQ:
Q: I’ve never parked at the fair before, what is it like?
A: New people are always welcomed, on the registration there is a box to let us know you’ve never done it before. Depending on the shift, and the weather, it can be quiet or constantly busy. In general, the name of the game is to get cars into spots quickly and safely. Depending on your comfort level there is a job for you, much of the work is just pointing people forwards.
Q: What do I need to bring?
A: Not much, depending on the weather sun protection / rain protection is key, but we provide ice cold water / soda, and food at regular intervals. We also provide reflective vests that go over clothing, reflective poles to direct traffic, and 2-way radios to communicate about ongoing things in the parking lot.
Q: What’s in it for me?
A: We have 3 reasons:
If you work a shift, you can go into the fair after for free!
This is one of the largest fundraisers for the Paris Curling Club it is a critical piece to keeping our membership lower for everyone.
The founding members of our building (1960’s ) only managed to build because the agricultural society gave use the space to build with a 100 year lease. If it wasn’t for this generous act, the cost of running our club would have been so much higher. Helping the P.A.S. is helping the P.C.C.
Q: Do I need to be a member of the curling club to do this?
A: Friends of the club are always welcome, with understanding we will try to convince them to curl while they are parking cars with us.
Q: My child is in high school does this count towards volunteer hours?
A: Absolutely It does, bring the paperwork and the captain will sign off on the work at the end of the shift.
Q: I’ve parked before, and I have the time, but I’ve never been a captain what do I need to know?
A: Typically, the week before we have a meeting at the fair and go over any details that have come up with the fair board rep. You also are given a second radio and the golf cart connected to the fair’s network to get the latest updates from them. In general, a captain is responsible for keeping everyone in the right place and making sure the team has water and food.
